What are neural networks?
In the rapidly evolving technology of artificial intelligence (AI), neural networks are the engine driving all sorts of things, from assistants for voice such as Siri to self-driving vehicles and medical diagnostics. If you've wondered what machines "learn" as humans do neural networks provide the solution. They are akin to the human brain's structure to process information that recognize patterns and even make predictions. What exactly are they and why do you need to know, particularly when you're a newbie or a career changer looking at IT job opportunities?
This blog will break it down in simple terms starting with the basics and moving on to real-world applications. If you're just beginning to dip your toes into AI or trying at mastering it, knowing neural networks is the first step to achieving high-demand jobs such as AI engineers or data scientists. If you're situated in Pune or any other city in India centres like IT Education Centre provide beginner-friendly AI classes in pune to help you develop the capabilities that employers are looking for.
The Basics: Inspired by the Human Brain
In their fundamentals neural networks are computer systems that are modeled on neurons that are found that are found in our brains. Think of billions firing signals to process thought--neural networks emulate this process digitally.
One individual neurons (or perceptron in the technical sense) is a single neuron that receives inputs (like numbers that represent image pixels) and then apply the weights (importance factors) as well as an amount of bias (adjustment) and then it passes the result through an activation function to determine whether the program "fires." Mathematically, it's:
y=f((wixi)+b)y=f((wixi)+b)
In this example, xixi is inputs, wiwi-weights,( B) biased, as well as( F) an activation (e.g. either sigmoid as well as ReLU, which is a non-linearity indicator).
They stack these in layers which are An Input layer receives data from the input layer, hidden layers process it and then the out layer produces the results (e.g., "cat" or "dog" from an image). Early networks such as those of the 1950s Perceptron resolved simple issues, but had difficulty with complexity, until the 1980s "backpropagation" algorithm allowed multi-layer (deep) networks.
Nowadays, deep neural networks (DNNs) with hundreds of layers enable AI marvels. Fun fact: Learning one can take weeks using GPUs however, the reward? machines outperform humans in activities such as chess and folding proteins.
Types of Neural Networks: Pick Your Tool
Neural networks are not all identical. Each one is suited to a specific job:
• Feedforward Neural Networks (FNNs): Data flows in one direction, which is perfect to be used for classification purposes (e.g. spam detection).
• Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are the kings of videos and images. They employ filters to identify the edges, shapes, and forms--think filters on Instagram or cancer detection using the X-rays.
• Recurrent neural networks (RNNs): Handle sequences such as texts or stock prices. The LSTMs (a RNN variant) remember the long-term dependencies of chatbots.
• Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs): Two networks rival each other. One creates fakes (deepfakes) and the other identifies them, creating real-looking art or faces.
• Transformers The core of GPT models and ChatGPT that excels in the field of the language field through "attention" Mechanisms.
Type Best For Example Application
FNN Simple forecasts Credit scoring
CNN Images/videos Recognition of facial features
RNN/LSTM Time series/sequences Translation of language
GAN Generation Fake image creation
Transformer NLP Chatbots that look like me!
They're real-world job opportunities. LinkedIn reports AI jobs grew by 74% per year in India and the country, with neural network capabilities top resumes.
